Why birds love solar panels
It makes sense when you think about it from the bird’s perspective.
Warmth. Solar panels absorb heat all day. The space underneath stays warm — even at night. That’s ideal for nesting.
Shelter. The panel acts as a roof. It blocks rain, wind, and direct sun. It’s protected from above, with the building’s actual roof below.
Height. Pigeons are cliff-nesting birds. A rooftop is high, exposed, and hard for predators to reach. Exactly what they’re looking for.
Put those three together and solar panels are better pigeon habitat than most natural sites. Once a pair moves in, they stay.
The damage birds cause to solar panels
The nesting itself is the smaller problem. The real damage comes from what happens over time.
Droppings on panels. Bird droppings are acidic. They corrode panel surfaces and reduce energy output. Even a thin layer of droppings can drop panel efficiency noticeably. Over months, the coating etches into the glass.
Wiring damage. Birds peck at and pull exposed wiring under the panels. This isn’t just an efficiency issue — damaged wiring is a fire risk.
Blocked drainage. Nesting material, feathers, and droppings block gutters and drainage channels around the panels. Water pools where it shouldn’t.
Structural load. A large nest with accumulated droppings adds weight to your roof in a concentrated area. Over years, this matters.
Health risk. Dried pigeon droppings can carry pathogens including histoplasmosis and salmonella. When droppings are disturbed — during panel cleaning or maintenance — those pathogens become airborne.
The cruel irony: the panels you installed to save money now need expensive cleaning, repair, and eventually replacement if the birds aren’t managed.
How solar panel bird proofing works
The solution is mesh exclusion. It’s simple, and it works.
A fine-gauge mesh is fitted around the entire perimeter of the solar panel array, closing off the gap between the panels and the roof. Birds can’t get in. They can’t nest. They move on.
The mesh is secured with clips that attach to the panel frame — no drilling into panels or the roof. It doesn’t affect panel performance, airflow, or maintenance access. Mesh sections can be removed for servicing.
It’s not a deterrent. It’s a physical barrier. There’s nothing for the birds to figure out or work around.
Why proofing during installation is cheaper
If you’re installing new solar panels, this is the time to add bird proofing. It’s faster and cheaper to mesh panels before birds move in than after.
Once birds are already nesting, the site needs to be cleaned and cleared before mesh can be installed. That’s extra time and cost that you avoid by proofing from day one.
